What are butchers curtains?
Butchers curtains are overlapping PVC strips fitted across doorways between food-preparation rooms, stockrooms and chilled areas. Staff and trolleys can pass through the flexible strips, which fall back into place afterwards. They provide a practical way to limit an exposed doorway while keeping regular access straightforward.
A made-to-measure kit brings together the strips and hanging components for your required size. If you already have suitable hardware, replacement plastic door strips let you refresh worn material without automatically replacing the whole curtain.
Choose the material for the room temperature
An ambient preparation-room doorway and a freezer entrance have different requirements. Record the normal and lowest operating temperatures on both sides before selecting the PVC. For chilled and frozen stores, compare our cold-room and freezer curtains and check the relevant grade in the technical data sheets.
Clear material helps preserve visibility between rooms. Strip width, thickness and overlap should also suit the people, trays and trolleys using the route. A heavier curtain is not automatically a better choice for frequent staff access.
Plan around preparation, deliveries and cleaning
Start with the working day: where ingredients arrive, where prepared products move and when the room is cleaned. Position the curtain so it works with the existing door, trolley route and available fixing surface. Check the finished drop and floor clearance rather than assuming the doorway height is the curtain length.
- Allow for the widest trolley or load, including handles and projecting trays.
- Keep the curtain accessible for inspection, cleaning and removal.
- Explain your cleaning products and routine when asking about material suitability.
- Check whether a fixed curtain is sufficient or whether occasional clear access is needed.
PVC strip curtains are one part of the room arrangement. Where your procedures require food-contact documentation, ask for evidence for the exact supplied grade; transparency alone is not evidence of suitability for direct food contact.
New curtain or replacement strips?
Choose a complete PVC strip curtain kit for a new doorway or when the existing hanging system also needs replacing. For an established curtain, measure the strip width, thickness and length and identify the hanging plates before ordering individual strips. A photograph of the rail and plates helps us check compatibility.
For an occasional large delivery, a sliding strip curtain can move aside. Tell us how much space is available beside the doorway to accommodate the gathered curtain.
Common questions about butchers curtains
Do butchers curtains replace a cold-room door?
No. They provide a flexible barrier during access and should be planned alongside the insulated door and refrigeration system. Do not assume a strip curtain provides the same seal or insulation as the closed door.
Will plastic strips keep flies out?
They can reduce the time a doorway is unobstructed, but movement and gaps remain. They are not an insect-proof seal. Describe the problem before ordering if insect control is your main reason for fitting a curtain.
Can I replace just a few damaged strips?
Yes, where the remaining curtain and hardware are suitable. Match the grade and dimensions and check plate compatibility so replacement strips work with the existing overlap.
