Keep kitchen access simple

A commercial kitchen doorway can be used repeatedly during service, deliveries and cleaning. PVC strip curtains provide a flexible barrier that staff can pass through without drawing the whole curtain aside. They can help reduce draughts and air exchange between adjoining areas while retaining a view through clear material.

For restaurants, hotels and catering facilities, the specification should follow the route: a staff-only store, a trolley entrance and a walk-in freezer will not necessarily need the same curtain. A complete made-to-measure kit provides a straightforward starting point for a new doorway.

Walk-in fridges and freezer entrances

State the normal and lowest operating temperatures when choosing a curtain for a cold room. Material needs to remain suitable for the conditions in which it is used. Compare the cold-room and freezer curtain range and the standard and polar PVC data before deciding.

Plan the strips around the existing insulated door, door closer and threshold. The curtain should support everyday access without preventing the door from operating as intended. A plastic door curtain does not replace the closed cold-room door or establish a guaranteed reduction in refrigeration costs.

Choose for the person carrying the load

Consider the full movement through the doorway: a chef carrying trays, a porter pushing a trolley or a delivery being unloaded. The curtain should suit the frequency of passage and the load dimensions. Do not choose heavy-duty warehouse strips simply because the kitchen is busy.

  • Identify staff, tray, trolley and delivery routes.
  • Measure the curtain drop from the proposed mounting position.
  • Check nearby shelving, door swings and trolley handles.
  • Discuss cleaning access and how strips will be removed or replaced.

For doorways used by both customers and staff, explain the visibility and access requirements before ordering. Keep designated escape routes and door operation under review with the person responsible for the premises.

Maintain the curtain as part of the kitchen routine

Inspect strips for damage, clouding and gaps, and clean them using an approach suitable for the supplied PVC. Explain the cleaning chemicals and temperature if you need compatibility advice. Worn strips can be renewed through our replacement plastic door strips service where the existing hardware is compatible.

If a specification calls for direct food-contact suitability or a particular certificate, request evidence for the exact grade. A clear appearance and an easy-clean surface do not by themselves establish certification.

Refrigerated displays need a different solution

A hotel buffet or retail-style display cabinet has different access and ventilation needs from a walk-in room. For a multi-deck refrigerated cabinet, use the chiller blinds quote tool. Record the display dimensions and any shelves, controls or vents that the curtain must accommodate.

Hospitality curtain questions

Can the curtain be fitted behind an existing door?

Often this can be planned, but check the mounting surface, available clearance and door movement first. Send a photograph if the door closer or frame makes the arrangement unclear.

Can I use the same PVC in the kitchen and freezer?

Do not assume so. Choose each curtain against its own operating temperature and access requirements.

What do I need for an online quote?

Have the curtain width, finished drop, fixing position and required grade ready. Our measuring guide explains the main choices. For several doorways, label each set of measurements so the specifications stay clear.

Simple measuring guide

How to measure for a PVC strip curtain

  1. 1

    Measure the clear width

Measure left to right in millimetres. For face fixing, allow approximately 100 mm beyond each side where space permits.

  2. 2

    Measure the total drop

Measure from the intended fixing point to the floor. Leave a small clearance so the strips move freely.

  3. 3

    Check traffic and temperature

Pedestrians, trolleys, forklifts and freezer environments each benefit from different PVC grades and overlaps.

  4. 4

    Send the details

Use an online quote tool or call our team for practical advice before ordering.
